The Best Dolby Atmos Audio Devices Of 2022

wireless subwoofer? Bluetooth? HDMI? Of all the features available in a speaker, one of the most requested features by readers is Dolby Atmos audio. Like the DTS:X audio format, Atmos differs from conventional surround sound by adding height to music and movies.

Dolby Atmos speakers are more expensive than ever, especially when compared to traditional Atmos receivers and surround sound speakers. These speakers also have the downside of being smaller and easier to install than home theater systems and can’t deliver the same level of performance.

The VizioM512a is my favorite Dolby Atmos soundbar for under $500. This soundbar offers custom height channels, surround sound speakers, and high-quality sound at an affordable price. Most of the price competitors can only offer virtual surround sound or height simulation speakers. Soundbars like the Sonos Beam Gen 2 and Sony HT-G700 don’t have speakers and use digital processing to mimic the effects above. Because these devices are efficient, they cannot replace physical height amplifiers.

It can easily stop at the $500 range, but with the more expensive models you get better sound quality, music streaming, voice assistants like Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa, and more. For example, the $900 Sonos Arc is an all-in-one speaker that offers great sound, excellent build quality, and great multi-room capabilities.

These are our favorite Atmos speaker options from $400 and up and are updated regularly as we review new products. Note: Some of these products are available to order now, so check back periodically if a particular model is not available.

Vizio M512a

The Vizio M512a is an improvement over its predecessor in almost every way. It is more beautiful, more beautiful and easier to use. The ability to stream over Wi-Fi is lost while Bluetooth functionality is preserved. If you’re looking for the cheapest way to add Dolby Atmos to your TV, this is it.

Signa S4 Fork

The Polk Signa S4 is the cheapest speaker with Dolby Atmos, but it doesn’t sacrifice performance to keep that price low. It is a 3.1.2 channel sound bar that supports various audio modes and Bluetooth streaming. Wireless speakers and customizable treble help isolate Atmos audio tracks and accompany music well.

hire an agent

If you like a little “high tech” in technology, go with the Vizio Elevate. It’s a 5.1.2 speaker system that uses electrical drivers to switch between Atmos and normal surround sound. It’s not just a trick, it’s also fun to watch! The Elevate also includes everything you’d expect from a modern speaker, including multiple HDMI inputs and music streaming over Wi-Fi.

Sonos Beam 2nd generation

The Sonos Beam Gen 2 may only offer simulated top speakers, but it’s the best Atmos I’ve heard from such a system. If you can’t afford to move around with the Sonos Arc or just want to keep things compact, the Sonos Beam offers a lot for the money.

sonos ark

If you want the best Dolby Atmos sound from a single bar, but don’t want to pay more than $1,000, the Sonos Arc is for you. To get the most out of this amp, you’ll need a 4K TV from 2019 or newer, but it still performs better than most, so this amp is a bit of an oddity. The Arc also offers plenty of great features, including a choice of voice assistants and Sonos’ superior streaming architecture.

Sennheiser Ambe Speakers

Want the best Atmos home theater audio experience in a single box? The sound may be louder than Sony, but Sennheiser Ambeo’s stand-alone speakers deliver the most immersive sound you’ve ever heard. Google Chromecast and Bluetooth connectivity are included for a seamless experience. The lack of a subwoofer on the Ambeo is still awkward, but it will especially appeal to apartment dwellers.

testing method

At , we test audio gear from built-in speakers to surround sound speaker systems, but regardless of the hardware, the approach is pretty much the same. I always compare products with one or more reference devices that offer the best performance for a similar price.

When it comes to soundbars, most people want both, so I want to see if the system works well with music and movies. I select and watch test scenes streamed from 4K or 4K Blu-ray streaming services (such as Vudu) and assess things like bass performance and dialog clarity. It also uses several demo tracks and tests streaming features like Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Inevitably, the top scorer is a system where both types of entertainment are good.

Questions and answers

Do I need HDMI 2.1 to hear Atmos?

Dolby Atmos can be played over a standard HDMI ARC connection with streaming services that use the Dolby Digital Plus codec and works flawlessly. If you want the full Dolby Atmos experience, you may need to upgrade to a new TV with an HDMI 2.1 port. In fact, the HDMI 2.1 port lets you use high-quality Atmos streams from Blu-ray players and game consoles.

Are Dolby Atmos speakers worth the extra cost?

If you’re a gamer or just love watching the latest blockbuster movies, Dolby Atmos speakers are worth the extra money. However, you do need to make sure you have a TV with an HDMI ARC port (for Dolby Digital Plus) and a source that supports Dolby Atmos, like an Xbox Series X or a newer Roku streaming stick.

What is the best connection for Dolby Atmos speakers?

The short answer is HDMI. The long answer is that there are two ways to connect Atmos to one of these speakers. The first and best option is to use a TV with an eARC (HDMI 2.1) port. This port is a feature of many modern TVs and can transmit the TV’s Atmos information (via a smart app or other connected device) to external speakers. Generic HDMI ARC works with some streaming services that offer Dolby Atmos.

On the other hand, if you have older TVs and Atmos sources like Blu-ray players, you’ll need speakers with at least two HDMI ports. The Vizio M512a allows you to connect external devices directly via HDMI.
